Raku and Pit Firing Workshop

We have reserved this weekend at the Ranch for a hands-on ceramics workshop.

Raku firing creates brilliant metallic, crackle, and smoke patterns on clay that are unique to each piece. Pit firing leaves one-of-a-kind patterns on the clay surface, influenced by organic and inorganic materials, smoke, and flame in the firing pit. Maria Martinez of New Mexico and Juan Quezada of Mexico are world famous for their pit- fired pottery.

For this workshop we will work with classic forms, creative patterns, textures and alternative finishes such as Raku and Pit firing. You will take home a raku and/or pit fired, hand built piece you made on site, as well as one or two pieces provided that you will glaze and complete with alternative finishes.

We will have a selection of wheel thrown items to choose from to glaze and fire as you wish. Organic and inorganic combustibles will be supplied to create amazing one-of-a- kind patterns and designs on the clay surface.

You can bring in your own piece to Raku or Pit fire if you wish (cone 5 – 10 clay). Small pieces preferred; 6″ wide by 12″ in height, max. For safety reasons, all participants should wear closed shoes and tie back long hair during the workshop.

See our sample itinerary page for instructor-led event details.

Cost includes: *Professional workshop instruction, 3 nights lodging and 8 meals at Rancho La Bellota, horseback riding, all transportation in Mexico, and winery tour in Valle de Guadalupe. Optional wine purchases are paid on your own. Workshop size is limited to 10 guests to provide individual attention and instruction. All equipment and materials are included in the workshop fee for each participant.
