INTERSECTIONS: Culture, Nature, Photography & Drawing
A weekend of Photography • Ecology and Landscape • Drawing and Painting • Horseback Riding and Ranch Life

Environmental and sustainability educator Colin H. Richard, master artist Kenda Francis, and photographic artist/instructor Peter Francis, will lead a mix of guided ecology walks, mixed media nature drawing lessons, and celestial and cyanotype photography lessons at Rancho La Bellota May 7-10, 2020.

Colin H. Richard has many years experience in the South Coast Bioregion teaching permaculture and sustainable living. His relationships with Kumeyaay cultural practitioners has deepened his awareness of nature. Colin will serve as your environmental and intercultural interpreter on the trail, helping you recognize and connect with the surrounding nature and culture while deepening relationships with people and place.

Kenda Francis will teach observational drawing with writing in graphite and ink and enhanced with paint, pencil and pastel media. We’ll slow down and observe details, colors, textures, bringing these elements to life in your drawings. Kenda will demonstrate the importance of keen observation, composition, line, and color with playful experimentation, resulting in several final drawings you will be proud of. All essential drawing materials will be provided.

Peter Francis will provide photography instruction in the following areas: sunset/compressed landscape, nighttime/long-exposure & celestial capture, light painting, cyanotype photograms inspired by nature, and capturing an exhilarating horse stampede! Peter will be available for one-on-one photo instruction throughout the weekend to ensure you will advance your photography to an exciting new level.

All drawing/painting materials are included. Each participant may make up to four cyanotype prints, with additional paper available for purchase at cost. Bring your own camera, lenses, and chargers; a list of recommended gear will be provided upon registration.

See our sample itinerary page for instructor-led event details.

Cost includes: *Professional workshop instruction, 3 nights lodging and 8 meals at Rancho La Bellota, horseback riding, all transportation in Mexico, and winery tour in Valle de Guadalupe. Optional wine purchases are paid on your own. Workshop size is limited to provide individual attention and instruction.
